Volunteers
If you can spare just an hour a week and live in the Atlanta area, consider becoming a Hillside volunteer. You will know the special joy of being an important, eagerly anticipated visitor to one of our young people.
We have a need for volunteers to serve in a number of areas:
v Child Mentor/Special Friend
Many of our kids do not have a stable family to visit them at Hillside. When appropriate and depending upon availability, these residents can be matched with a special friend from the community to regularly spend an hour or more together on campus. This reminds the child that there are people beyond Hillside who care about
them and who can serve as positive role models for them.
v
Skill lessons
From time to time we will have a young person who has an interest in special areas such as learning to play the guitar, singing, or playing chess.
v Educational Assistants
Most of our Hillside residents could use a little extra help with their homework or to boost their strength in a subject area, such as reading.
By working with a child, the volunteer supports their experiences in the
Hillside school program.
v Activity
Assistants
Activity
Assistants offer their support in a wide variety of activities
and recreation that are an important part of Hillside
children's experiences. Examples include sports and fitness;
Boy and Girl Scout troops; music and dance; sewing and
quilting; etiquette and grooming.
v Administrative
Volunteers
Help
with administrative or clerical functions and projects on a
temporary or ongoing basis. Duties may include answering
phones; greeting visitors; and helping with mailings.
v Special
Events Assistants
Provide
extra support at special events for our children and their
families. Special events include dances, plays, performances,
and community meals.
v Group
Project Volunteers
Volunteers
take on the accomplishment of a particular project as a group,
often through a club, company or civic group. This may be a
one-time event; a performance for the Hillside children; a
Hillside fundraiser; or a property improvement project.
We strive to be flexible with the volunteer's schedule. Weekends and weekday
afternoons or early evenings are the most easily arranged.
All of these opportunities require a high level of commitment. For our kids, abandonment is an all too common experience. Please consider your availability carefully before contacting Hillside. For the protection of our residents, Hillside conducts background checks on our volunteers.
